Future Trends in Bioorganic Chemistry
Bioorganic chemistry is an emerging science at the interface between the traditional fields of chemistry and biochemistry. It addresses biological questions at the molecular level, using organic chemistry and principles of physical organic chemistry, and includes studies on a broad spectrum of chemical structures, from low molecular weight compounds and natural products to macromolecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids. The investigation of chemistry–biology interplay very often provides an understanding of physiological processes and may lead to the identification of strategies for the development of innovative therapies for unmet clinical needs. Computer-aided approaches thus become an inseparable third partner of experimental organic chemistry and molecular biology to solve all mechanistic mysteries at the molecular level.
This Webinar will show the importance of conformational equilibria and dynamics analysis, the design and synthesis of metal complex-peptide hybrids for cancer theranostics, and the potential of alkylated glucomimetics for the treatment of Gaucher Disease.

Chair
Francesca Cardona, born in 1971, received her Master’s degree in Chemistry in 1995 with Dr. A. Goti and her PhD in Chemical Sciences in Firenze in 1998 with Prof. A. Brandi. After a 1-year Post-Doc at the University of Lausanne (CH), with Prof. P. Vogel, she was hired as a permanent researcher (2002–2015) at the Chemistry Department in Firenze, where she has been an Associated Professor since 2015. In 2006, she was awarded the “G. Ciamician” medal of the Italian Chemical Society (Organic Chemistry Division) for young researchers. She has been a member of the Editorial Board of Molecules (Bioorganic Chemistry Section) since 2020. Her interests span from the stereoselective syntheses of nitrogenated glycomimetics and their biomedical applications to new green oxidation methods, as well as multivalency. She is the author of 101 papers, 11 chapters in scientific books, 1 book (RSC) and 1 patent (h-index 34) on these topics.
Invited Speakers
Prof. Anthony Serianni is a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame. His research interests include: methods development for site-specific isotopic labeling of carbohydrates and their derivatives; synthesis and conformational studies of simple and complex carbohydrates related to the N-glycans of human glycoproteins by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, crystallography and other biophysical techniques; applications of molecular orbital theory and molecular dynamics to aid in the interpretation of NMR parameters in saccharides; structure–function studies of non-enzymic protein glycation; and chemical evolution. He has co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed research papers, numerous review articles and book chapters, and is a recipient of the Horace S. Isbell and Melville L. Wolfrom research awards from the Division of Carbohydrate Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. Anthony is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. Prof. Serianni also co-founded Omicron Biochemicals, Inc., a glycoscience company that specializes in the synthesis of stable isotopically labeled carbohydrates, nucleosides and their derivatives.
Shin Aoki graduated from the University of Tokyo with B. S. (1986), M.S. (1988), and Ph.D. (1992) degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences under the supervision of Prof. Kenji Koga. He started his academic carrier as an assistant professor at the University of Tokyo from 1990. Following postdoctoral positions with Professor Chi-Huey Wong at the Department of Chemistry, the Scripps Research Institute, USA, he joined Prof. Eiichi Kimura’s research group in 1995 at the Faculty of Medicine, Hiroshima University, where he became an associate professor in 2001. In 2003, he became a professor at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tokyo University of Science. He is a recipient of the Award of Japan Society of Coordination Chemistry for Young Scientists (1999), the AJINOMOTO Award in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan (2001) and the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan Award for Young Scientists (2002), among others. His major research interests are organic synthetic chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, photochemistry, and medicinal chemistry, mainly using metal complexes in aqueous solution. Membership of Academic Societies: The American Chemical Society, American Society for Photobiology, The Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, The Chemical Society of Japan, and The Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan, Society of Coordination Chemistry (Japan).

On Tuesday 1 June 2021, MDPI and the Journal Molecules organized the 9th webinar, entitled "Future Trends in Bioorganic Chemistry".
The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Professor Francesca Cardona, from the University of Florence, Italy. Her interests span from the stereoselective syntheses of nitrogenated glycomimetics and their biomedical applications to new green oxidation methods, as well as multivalency.
The first speaker to quick off this webinar was Prof. Dr. Anthony S. Serianni from the University of Notre Dame, USA. A few of his many research interests include methods development for site-specific isotopic labeling of carbohydrates and their derivatives; synthesis and conformational studies of simple and complex carbohydrates related to the N-glycans of human glycoproteins by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, etc. His presentation was entitled “MA’AT Analysis: Conformational Equilibria and Dynamics from NMR Spin-Couplings and Circular Statistics”.
The second presentation with the title " Design and Synthesis of Luminescent Iridium Complex-Peptide Hybrids for the Theranostics of Cancer" was held by Prof. Dr. Shink Aoki. His major research interests are organic synthetic chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, photochemistry, and medicinal chemistry, mainly using metal complexes in aqueous solution
The last presentation was given by the Chair herself, Prof. Dr. Francesca Cardona, and was entitled " Synthesis of Alkylated Azasugars: New Potential Pharmacological Chaperones for Gaucher Disease?"
